The head of the US government's coronavirus vaccine development program has suggested that it will have enough doses for 30 million people by year-end if tests confirm their safety and effectiveness.
Moncef Slaoui, chief adviser for the Operation Warp Speed program, spoke at a symposium on Tuesday.
He said efficacy data on vaccines being put through final-stage clinical trials by US pharmaceutical firms Moderna and Pfizer are expected to be available in the next several weeks.
He added that if the vaccines' safety and efficacy are confirmed, there should be enough doses to immunize 30 million people between November and December.
Slaoui suggested the first data readouts from the US study on the vaccine being developed by Britain's AstraZeneca won't be available until next year due to the temporary suspension of clinical trials.
He also noted the US firm Johnson & Johnson's vaccine will likely be available early next year.
The US Food and Drug Administration has said it will authorize the emergency use of coronavirus vaccines that meet certain standards.
